Happy Snow Day, Gateway!

If you grew up in the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s, you probably remember the ritual of watching and waiting for the school closings on the news. My sister, brother, and I would cross our fingers and wait for “Mayfield” to scroll on the alphabetical list of Cleveland schools…

“Olmsted Falls…..Orange…Macedonia….Maple Heights…..”

**Here it comes!!! Oh boy!!!**

“….Normandy…..”

Everyone. But. Us.

If your kids were on the “not you” list this morning, my heart goes out to them! Better luck next time!

Here’s what’s going on this week….

Choir Rehearsal Cancelled tonight: Melissa Pickens is in the process of scheduling a make-up rehearsal now. Email her at mfpickens@gmail.com for details.

No Hunger Holiday (this weekend and Tuesday, November 20th): Hadrian and Yolanda asked me to share two things this week:

  1. Turkeys can be brought to the church tonight or tomorrow night between 5pm and 7pm, on Saturday 9am-2pm, or on Sunday 9am-1pm. If possible, we would prefer for Gateway members to bring their turkeys to church on Sunday, as we are expecting community deliveries and a bulk delivery on Saturday.
  2. Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, November 20th. We have shifts beginning at 8am going to 9pm that evening. Please SIGN UP HEREif you are able! We especially need people between the hours of noon and 3pm on Tuesday.

Christmas Banquet (Friday December 7th, 6pm – 10pm): Ticket sales have been extended to Sunday, November 25th. CLICK HERE to register you and your family now. Also, please do continue to send your pictures to me; you can just reply to this email. We’ve already gotten several but definitely have room for more. Additionally, we do want everyone to attend this end of year celebration. If money is an issue, just let your family group leader know.

Blood Drive (Sunday December 9th, 8:30am – 1pm): The sign up link for the blood drive is open now.  CLICK HERE to sign up now. As a special Christmas gift, anyone who donates for this blood drive will be emailed a $5 Amazon gift card after their donation!

All for now, have a great week!

THE WEEKLY

Christmas Banquet2018

Hello, Gateway!

Some additional details we wanted to share about the Christmas Banquet on Friday, December 7th:

  • Registration will end on Wednesday, November 21st. Why so early? We need to get our total number of guests and meal selections into the hotel on the Monday after Thanksgiving. I’ll be off from November 22nd to November 25th, so I want to make sure I’m available to answer any questions or concerns about your registrations before I go on break. Sending the banquet order in will be THE FIRST thing I do after I return from vacation! In person sales will be available after church this Sunday and next, or you can GO HERE for full details and to register now.
  • Take the elevator home for $104. If you would like an easy “ride” home, we invite you to take advantage of the courtesy block at the Holiday Inn. To take advantage of the special rate, just call 314-892-3600, and let them know you are with Gateway City Church.
  • Plan to arrive by 6:30, but no later than 6:45. As this is a plated dinner, it’s important that all attendees arrive on time. Please keep in mind that Friday evening commute traffic is fairly heavy (and could be more so in bad weather). Please allow a little extra time to get to the venue.

We hope to see you there! Click here for full details and to register.

No Hunger Holiday: Two reminders for this week:

  • GO HERE to sign up to volunteer for onsite help. Phase 2 has been going GREAT, but we now need help for Phase 3, which is onsite volunteering. We need volunteers on November 17th, 18th, and 20th in various roles.
  • If you are planning to shop for your own frozen turkeys, please bring them to church on Sunday, November 18th. We will have a freezer truck onsite that day to store the turkeys until they can be delivered to Knights of Columbus for distribution. Don’t forget that the Ruler Foods sale continues through November 21st.

Finally, three events at the building this week:

High School Parents Devotional (Tonight, 7pm). Led by Tink and Glinda Sullivan
Singles Devotional (Friday, 7pm). Led by Vince Hawkins
Titus 2 Women (Saturday, 9:30am). Led by Robin Hawkins.

Have a great week, everyone!

PacMan

Happy Halloween everyone!

For those of you venturing out this evening, be safe! Usually I’m the one who escorts my kids but this year I have candy bowl duty at home. Please stop by! (1446 Glenpeak, 63043.) • If you are bringing a soup or chili, please also remember to bring a serving utensil. We have only a few “community ladles” in our kitchen, so bring your own if you want to be sure your soup will be eaten.

We especially need men, as there’s some heavy lifting that needs to be done. A few volunteers will also be needed for night-of setup and also post-event tear-down.

THE WEEKLY

Gateway,

If some of you are a little sleepy today, it’s understandable….last night’s Rockies vs. Cubs game broke the record on the longest “winner-take-all” game in MLB history.

But although it was long game, the record for the longest game ever still stands. There are a few ways to measure this, but in terms of time the longest game was May 8th, 1984, Chicago White Sox vs. Milwaukee Brewers. The game took 8 hours and 6 minutes to play, 25 innings, and had to be completed over 2 days!

And the shortest 9-inning game? September 28, 1919. New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies. 51 minutes.

A few events coming up (none lasting more than a few hours!):

Budgeting Class (Sunday October 7th, following church): This free class is open to all who would like to learn how to create a budget on any income. Contact Alia Aikens with questions: 314-409-4825.

Singles Event Cancellation: The Singles Harvest Festival on October 27th has been cancelled, however the devotionals on October 12th and November 9th will still take place. Contact Kimberly Williams with questions: 314-813-8118.

Gateway Choir (Thursdays beginning October 11th): Come and sing! Gateway Choir is a diverse group seeking singers of all experience levels who are at least 13 years old. We will perform special music for worship services and events. Gateway Choir will rehearse on Thursdays at the church building from 7pm to 8:30pm (excluding the week of Thanksgiving). Our first rehearsal will be Thursday, October 11 as we prepare music for Christmas. Interested? Contact Melissa Pickens (mfpickens@gmail.com).

Men’s Breakfast (Saturday October 20th, 9am): This will be the final Men’s Breakfast of the year. All men and their sons are invited to meet us at the Denny’s near Dorsett and 270. Contact Rob Woods with questions: 314-484-8428.

Fall Festival (Saturday October 20th, 5pm – 9pm): Remember to RSVP! Admission is free but we ask all who are planning to attend to GO HERE and complete our RSVP form. Chili chefs, have you signed up for the cookoff? Space is still available but is going quickly. You can also sign up for the chili contest through our RSVP form. Advance registration is required for entry in the chili cookoff.

No Hunger Holiday (throughout October and November): BIG thanks to all who have donated so far to sponsor families for Thanksgiving! We’ll have an update for you on Sunday of how much has been collected so far. Donations will be accepted through October 17th, CLICK HERE to make a donation now. Just $4 will feed an entire family!

And one last thing….

Our Business Directory is ready! CLICK HERE for the electronic version or pick up a paper copy on Sunday. Special thanks to all who submitted business information for this directory, and also BIG THANKS Deb Selzle for compiling, organizing, reviewing, and ultimately publishing our directory.

See you on Sunday!
