Good News, Gateway Family!

Beginning this Sunday, the Sunday bulletin will include member birthdays by birthday month! These will be listed in order of occurrence.

Going forward you can expect to see birthdays on the backside of the bulletin (say that 5x fast!) on the first two Sundays of each month. Why the first two?  In case I leave one or two off by mistake…gives me a chance to correct the error. 😉

For the sake of members’ privacy, we will not list the exact dates, just the month. But feel free to reach out to your friends to find out their exact birthdays.

Remember that you can also access the bulletins for the past six weeks on the website and the app. It’s one of my goals for 2018 to have every Sunday bulletin uploaded by the Saturday prior to church service. This way, you can read it on your phone Sunday morning, before you even arrive at Gateway.

Here’s what’s coming up:

Singles Kickoff Breakfast (Saturday January 6th, 9am): There are some GREAT plans in the works for 2018! All Singles are invited to join us for a hot breakfast at the church building, as well as some time to dream and plan for the coming year. Questions? Text Theresa Warner (309-310-1515) or Ellen Campen (281-757-7179).

Titus 2 Women (Saturday January 20th, 9:30am): Our first quarterly Titus 2 class of the year will be taught by Kathleen Palmer! Topic will be announced soon. As always, light refreshments will be provided and childcare will be available for the little ones.

Sacred Marriage Book Discussion Group (Sundays, Jan 28 – Mar 11, 1pm): Marrieds, you have a great opportunity to learn about how through marriage, you can grow to be more like Jesus. Read more about this discussion group HERE on our website, or sign up HERE.

One more thing...I’ve been working with Tim and Crystal Schmidt on the camp registration forms for both HYC and HKK. We’re putting the finishing touches on them now; if all goes to plan, we should be able to launch BOTH camp registrations this Friday!

That’s it for now…stay warm, Gateway!

Fiery 2018 New Year date with sparkling trails

Great news! The events for 2018 have all been uploaded to our calendar! You can view the full calendar HERE on our website, or on our app (select the “Calendar” button, dates are published on the app in a list form.)

If you prefer an at-a-glance version, with everything on one page, you can view that on our bulletin from two weeks ago HERE. This will also be reproduced this coming Sunday.

Fun fact: The six most recent Sunday bulletins and Weekly emails are also posted on our website and app, so if you miss a week it’s easy to get caught up!

A few dates you should be aware of right away for 2018:

Children’s Ministry Kickoff Meeting (Sunday January 7th, following church service): Current and new teachers, if you have not yet RSVP’d for next Sunday’s meeting, please take a second and do so now for two reasons:

Singles Valentines Party – February 16th, 7-10pm. Location is TBD.

That’s it for this week. See you on Sunday at 9am for our FINAL church service of the year! Remember that this will be a family service just like last week; childcare will be offered for kids ages 4 and under.

Do you love “A Charlie Brown Christmas”? This classic will celebrate its 52nd annual airing tomorrow night (7PM, on ABC). A few fun facts about this half hour cartoon:

  • The show was directly responsible for killing the aluminum Christmas tree industry (and subsequently making aluminum trees collector’s items on eBay).
  • The show had a production budget of only $76,000 (about $500,000 by today’s standards)
  • Charles Schulz’s name was initially misspelled in the opening credits.

Read more fun facts HERE.

Just a couple things for this week:

Holiday Services (December 24th and December 31st): This coming Sunday, we will not be meeting at 9am for our normal worship service. Instead, we will gather at 4:30pm for a special Christmas Eve family service.Children will sit with their parents this Sunday; childcare will still be provided for ages 4 and under.

On December 31st, we will have service as usual at 9am. This will also be a family-style service with childcare available for ages 4 and under.

Children’s Ministry 2018 Kickoff Meeting (Sunday January 7th, following church service): If you currently serve as a children’s ministry teacher, or recently signed up to serve, we ask that you join us for our 2018 Kickoff Meeting! Continental breakfast will be provided as our way of saying “thank you” for your willingness to serve our kids and their families.

More than just a fun breakfast, some vital information will also be shared. We’ll be discussing plans for 2018, and also going over some ministry updates that will help you do your best in serving our kids. We strongly encourage all teachers who are able to attend to make plans to do so. If you are a children’s ministry teacher, please RSVP yes/no for the kickoff meeting using this form.

That’s it for this week! See you on Sunday at 4:30!

THE WEEKLY: 12/6/17

Brothers and Sisters,

By now you are probably aware that December 24th falls on a Sunday this year, and you might be wondering whether we will have church service that day.

The answer is YES!

Our Christmas Eve service will take place at 4:30pm on Sunday, December 24th. This will be a family-style service; parents will sit with their kids. This service will take the place of our normal 9am Sunday morning service.

December 31st (New Year’s Eve) we will have service at our normal time, at 9am.

Lots more coming up soon:

Family Devotional (Wednesday December 6th, 7pm): At our second family devotional, we will be discussing the topics of prioritizing and discipline. This is for all parents of kids ages infant through high school. And there will be a potluck! Please bring a snack to share.

Crossing the Line Workshop (Saturday December 9th, 1:30pm – 4pm): Parents, if you will need childcare, please take a minute to sign up now. While walk-ins will be accepted, we are staffing childcare for this event based on the number that have pre-registered. At the moment, only a few families have signed up for childcare, so we are planning accordingly. Those that do pre-register are guaranteed a space, but additional children will be accepted only as space permits. This form will remain open through midnight tonight (December 6th). Childcare is for ages infant thru 5th grade; middle school and up are welcome to join us for the workshop.

Blood Drive (Sunday December 10th, 8:30am – 12:30pm): Click here to schedule a donation time now. Walk-ups will be accepted, but pre-registering through the above link will help you move through the process more quickly.

Questions? Contact Erin Coyle:

Santas for Seniors (Saturday December 16th, 3pm – 5pm):

Bring some Christmas cheer to a local senior! Gateway City Church is partnering with St. John’s Place to bring a merry Christmas to 75 local seniors.

Click here to sign up now.

There are two ways you can participate:

1) Donate a gift basket. Each gift basket will include a lap blanket, body wash, lotion, and  a candy cane. Gift baskets are only $10 each.

2) Volunteer at the Christmas party. We will be visiting St. John’s Place on Saturday, December 16th 3pm – 5pm. Volunteers will play games, sing songs, help man a photo booth, and distribute the Christmas gifts. Due to space constraints, there is a limit of 30 volunteers for this event.

Children age grade school and up may volunteer at the party with adult supervision.

Both volunteering sign-up and donations can be accessed through the sign-up form, HERE.

This form will remain open through Thursday, December 14th.
Hope to see many of you at the Christmas Banquet this Friday night! Remember to arrive by 6:15pm.

Have a great week,

THE WEEKLY: 11/29/17

One of my kids’ favorite traditions is our annual Advent calendar. We’ve done “daily candy” in the past, but they prefer activity-based calendars. Instead of chocolate, each day they open an envelope or small box with a slip of paper inside that state’s that day’s holiday event. Past calendars have included ice skating, cutting out snowflakes, or taking cookies to the fire department. If you want to make something similar, here’s a list of 70 family-friendly holiday activities to give you some ideas. Too overwhelming? You can also forego the calendar and just pick a few to do this Christmas season.

Speaking of activities, here’s what’s coming up:

Family Devotional (Wednesday December 6th, 7pm): Once again, this devotional is for ALL parents. We’ll be discussing prioritizing and discipline, both as it relates to ourselves and our kids.

Christmas Banquet (Friday, December 8th, 6pm-10pm): LAST CALL! The banquet registration will remain open until this Sunday, December 3rd. Click here to register now. This form is also accessible from the “sign up” link on our homepage, or you can register in person this coming Sunday at church.

Please plan on arriving between 6pm and 6:15pm; check-in will begin at 6pm. Because this is a plated dinner, we need everyone to take their seats by 6:45.

Got pictures?  We are still accepting photos for the banquet slideshow. Send them to, or just reply to this email. Pictures will be accepted through December 3rd.

Crossing the Line Workshop (Saturday, December 9th 1:30pm-4:00pm): Three things to know about our upcoming workshop:

1) Invite your friends! This workshop is not only for our members, but it’s also an outreach opportunity. To help you, we’ve posted a promo video on our Facebook page that you are welcome to share.

2) Suitable for ages Middle School and up. Childcare will be available for younger children.

3) Need childcare? Complete this form to pre-register your children. Completing the form will be a great help to our children’s ministry, as it will help them plan for an appropriate amount of teachers. You can also access this link from the “Sign Up” button on our website homepage.

GREAT NEWS: The Gateway To Hope Service team met earlier this evening, and we are extremely close to finalizing our two Christmas service projects! What we can share now is that both projects will have a local focus, helping individuals in our own community. More to come soon…stay tuned!

Have a great week everyone!

THE WEEKLY: 11/15/17

My son has been learning about Thanksgiving at school, and today he brought home this little gem. For those of you who don’t speak Connor, here’s the translation for the writing on the right:

FIRST…I would escape.
THEN…I would run far away.
LAST….I would sleep finally.

While turkeys don’t aspire to be part of Thanksgiving celebrations, I’m personally grateful and inspired by the generosity of our members! Thanks to you, your neighbors, friends, and coworkers, we will be placing MANY turkeys on tables this Thanksgiving.

We had hoped to originally provide 100 dinners.

This Saturday, we will distribute 330 turkey dinners with all the trimmings to local families. Incredible!

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend:

Friday, November 17th (7pm on): Open door, drop-by volunteering. Come by and help anytime, beginning at 7pm. This is kid-friendly, family-friendly volunteer time! If your kids can walk, they can help!

Saturday November 18th: Men, we need you beginning at 6am! We will need many brothers (and strong sisters) to help load and unload the truck. Boxes are about 25-35 pounds each; each box contains 2 turkeys. Please come and help! Show up at the building at 6am and from there we will caravan to Shop N Save to pick up the turkeys.

For the rest, if you are working first shift please plan on arriving no later than 8am. We’ll have a brief orientation, and then take our stations. Doors will open at 9am to start receiving families. Our first shift will last 8am-12noon, and then second shift will be 12noon-3pm. Second shift workers should arrive slightly before noon so they can also learn their roles.

Details for our Christmas service projects will be coming soon…and we have some good ones this year! Stay tuned.

Also coming soon:

Christmas Banquet (Friday December 8th, 6:15pm): You can view the full details for the banquet in last week’s Weekly, HERE. Tickets are $23 for adults and $9 for children 11 and under. Sales will remain open through Sunday, December 3rd. You can CLICK HERE to register now, or register in person at church over the next three Sundays.

Crossing the Line Workshop (Saturday December 9th, 1:30pm – 5:30pm):Michael Burns is coming back to St. Louis, and this time his wonderful wife MyCresha is also joining him! The Burnses will be hosting their “Crossing the Line” workshop at our church building the day after the banquet. The workshop is broken up into three sessions. This is a FREE event and all are invited to attend; please do invite your friends! Michael will also guest-preach on Sunday. Childcare will be provided.

Looking forward to seeing many of you on Friday and Saturday!
